The Tablettes de la vie et de la mort by Pierre Matthieu (1563–1621), published between 1606 and 1622 and edited by Gilles Ernst, are an illuminating document on ideas about death from the sixteenth to the seventeenth century, on the irenicism of a former Catholic League writer as the Reformation unfolded, and on his quatrain technique.
