Inspired by Paul Verlaine’s poem “La Mer est plus belle que les cathedrals” (The Sea is More Beautiful than Cathedrals), this book sets out to show how music, coming to think of itself as an autonomous art form in the 19th century, influenced poetry to the point of causing its formal architecture to collapse.
