Four neural translation tools were tested for excerpts from The Night Watchman: DeepL, Google Translate, Lingvanex and the translation function of WordL. Their mode of operation is at the sentence level, not at the paragraph or text level. While they save time in terms of text entry and provide variants, the cognitive screen of the target text is likely to diminish the translator's singular voice and foster overconfidence in the output of the mchine.
