Préséances de François Mauriac, une mystique de l'absence

  • Publication type: Article from a collective work
  • Collective work: Roman mystique, mystiques romanesques aux xxe et xxie siècles
  • Author: Le Corre (Élisabeth)
  • Abstract: François Mauriac’s fourth novel, Préséances, presents the structure of a Bildungsroman : although attracted to worldly pleasures, the narrator and his sister cannot but acknowledge their friend Augustin’s exemplariness. The latter, an enigmatic character, embodies the “mystic in the wild state”, modelled after Rimbaud and Augustin Meaulnes. His sudden disappearance highlights the limits of the mystical novel : the divine presence can only be expressed through loss, memory and deploration.
