  • Abstract: This article deals with the evolution of dialogues involving several characters through literary history. It focuses on the precise pattern of the « paradigmatic list », i.e. a type of polylogues where lines are « connected in parallel ». While medieval romances present stylized dialogues, Old Regime novels favour its anaphoric rhythm to create comic effects and realistic novels use this type of polylogues to describe their characters instead of involving them into the action. Thus, dialogues become idle talk that defines.
