La guerre de Camus
L’Étranger et Lettres à un ami allemand

  • Publication type: Article from a collective work
  • Collective work: Camus et l’éthique
  • Author: Davis (Colin)
  • Abstract: This contribution compares The Stranger and Letters to a German Friend in terms of their connection to the war. The first work, very much of the Resistance, justifies violence in order to put an end to German Occupation and rejects any doubt as to the intellectual or moral authority of the speaker. The Stranger, meanwhile, started before the conflict but reviewed and finished during the Occupation, can be read as an indirect response to the shock of defeat, and as the account of a traumatized powerlessness.
