  • Abstract: In A Night of Serious Drinking (1938), René Daumal (1908-1944) rereads the founding period (but also destructive, for excessive use of drugs) of the Grand Jeu (1927 to 1931), giving it the initiatory and universal scope of a mystical fable. The metaphor of thirst, polysemic and traditional, gives a spiritual meaning to the group experiments and leads the narrator – and the reader with him – from a wild to a sacred drunkenness, according to a Rabelaisian model.
