This study forges a more complex image of Louise Labé than the one traditionally provided. Encouraged by her humanist peers in Lyon to rediscover Sappho’s voice and procure one for Laura, the French poet also known as “La Belle Cordière” (The Beautiful Ropemaker) found a place within ancient tradition while at the same time creating a new ideal.
