The question of parody in Rabelais poses some formidable hermeneutic problems. Not only do scholars not always agree in recognizing the parodic nature of this or that passage; more importantly they often differ in their understanding of the author’s intention. The analysis of a range of Rabelaisian parodies—in particular those of literary genres—shows that they do not necessarily have a satirical intent.
