Rabelais’s books harbor an art of steganography, developed on the basis of a certain representation of Trithemius’s Steganographia. The secret role given by Rabelais to double images (through the use of rare, enigmatic, polysemic or invented words) can be partly decrypted by examining variants and the play of correspondences.
