L’essayisme de Marcel Proust
Une écriture paradigmatique

  • Publication type: Article from a collective work
  • Collective work: Essai et essayisme en France au xixe siècle
  • Author: Zima (Pierre V.)
  • Abstract: Like Nietzsche, Proust transforms ambivalence – the stuff of crisis – into a critical tool, using his essays and novel to demonstrate the extent to which extremes come together. This approach engenders a hesitant and self-reflective mode of writing orientated towards paradox and open questions, and which privileges paradigmatic (associative) structures rather than syntagmatic ones. At the level of structure, this mode is akin to the dream, working by process of association.
