Although marvels are essential to the Perceforest narrative, they are mostly absent from its illustrative miniatures in what stands as a rather intriguing discrepancy between text and image which I propose to examine in the present article. Research on the manuscripts’ context of production thus brings attention to the Burgundian nobility who commissioned them to promote their courtly ideals through didactic images with a clear and persuasive message – far from marvels and the doubt they cause.
