Manifestations of the Mongol-Armenian Relations in the Royal Art of the Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia Study of the depiction of the robe of Prince Lewon in manuscript No. 8321 (Yerevan, Mesrop Maštoc‛ Research Institute of Ancient Manuscripts / Matenadaran, fol. 15r)

In the second half of the 13^th century, when the Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia was engaged in an alliance with the Mongols, several new symbols and motifs appeared in Cilician arts, reflecting the contemporary Armenian-Mongol relations. The present paper examines the nature of kingship and visualization of power in the Armenian Kingdom, putting the main emphasis on the image of the future King Lewon II, and on some other artworks commissioned by the royal court throughout that period.
