In the second half of the 13th century, when the Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia was engaged in an alliance with the Mongols, several new symbols and motifs appeared in Cilician arts, reflecting the contemporary Armenian-Mongol relations. The present paper examines the nature of kingship and visualization of power in the Armenian Kingdom, putting the main emphasis on the image of the future King Lewon II, and on some other artworks commissioned by the royal court throughout that period.
