Hogarthian progress and narrative and moral continuity in the United States From pre-cinema to 1930s cinema

Beyond the question of pictorial quotations, few studies have highlighted the reception of Hogarthian references in cinema, and particularly his series of images. In the United States, the essay considers the mobilization of his narrative and moral progress to highlight, in connection with John Bunyan’s literary progress in the 17^th century and George Cruikshank’s pictorial one in the 19^th century, cross-media transfers from the magic lantern to cinema during the first decades of the 20^th century.
