Philippe Ragel, « Avant-propos.
Philippe Ragel, “Foreword. From the painted portrait to film: Inheritances, revivals, and figure”
Philippe Ragel is professor of history and film aesthetics at the University of Toulouse 2 – Jean Jaurès in the Heritage, Literature, and History unit (UR PLH). Continuing his work on Iranian cinema (Kiarostami, le cinéma à l’épreuve du réel, Yellow Now, 2008), he is interested in the poetic regimes of cinema (Le Film en suspens, PUR, 2015; Stase d’écrit, stase d’écran. Poétique du suspens narratif, Textimage, 2021, co-editor) as well as in pictorial and landscape issues.
Inscribed in a long literary tradition, painted portraits appear on screen from the outset, in silent films. While cinema reinforces “the characteristic of an artform” of this figure which is summoned, while its presence is at the junction of a construction of meanings in which it is involved, our purpose is to recall that the portrait of a 240character who may or may not be extradiegetic constitutes in a film both the agent of a theoretical proposal on portraits and the locus where it takes place.
Keywords: figure, film theory, portrait, presence, transmediality.
Jean-Michel Durafour, “Portraiture whose solution is the distant. Literally, painting: Street Angel”
Jean-Michel Durafour is a philosopher, university professor of aesthetics and theory of cinema, and poet. He is the author of several books, including most recently Tchernobyliana. In 2022, he will co-edit the Dictionnaire d’iconologie filmique with Emmanuelle André and Luc Vancheri (PUL) and will publish two books including Gene Tierney. Une irradiation blême (Circé). In 2021, under the pseudonym of Étienne Vaunac, he also published a collection of poems, Le Monde naturel (Le Lierre embrassant la muraille).
Some films propose a figurative thought that renews theological debates and engages theoretical conjectures on images. For instance, if Gance assumes that the cinema is a “luminous resurrection”, isn’t it because the projection transports the glorious body of human beings stripped of its organic functions and reduced to its somatic idea throught the spoke of a machine? In Borzage’s Street Angel, how does the painted portrait become a interface between theology and the singularity of cinema?
Keywords: film theory, Holy Face, light, repainted, theology.
Chiara Tognolotti and Laura Vichi, “An ambiguous portrait of pain. Fluid identity, androgyny, suffering, and artistic creation in The Fall of the House of Usher (Jean Epstein, 1928)”
Chiara Tognolotti (PhD) is a professor at the University of Pisa, where she teaches Italian film history and film aesthetics. Her latest works include La caduta della casa Usher (Jean Epstein, 1928). Fotogenie, superfici, metamorfosi (Mimesis 2020) and De la photogénie du réel à la théorie d’un cinéma au-delà du réel: L’archipel Jean Epstein (Kaplan 2020, with Laura Vichi).
Laura Vichi (PhD) is an independent researcher. Under the auspices of L’Usine aux Images, the organization she leads, she teaches and promotes film history through educational actions and with French organizations dedicated to popular education. She is the author of books on Henri Storck and Jean Epstein and of articles on Italian cinema, documentaries, avant-garde cinema, and silent cinema, some of which have appeared in international journals.
242Even if many of the pages written by Jean Epstein are dedicated to the intensity stemming from the close-up of the human face, when the images turn towards a portrait (La Chute de la maison Usher) the rules of the game appear to be different. Based on a number of recent publications as well as on archival sources, this article studies the complex relationship between the body and the portrait, so as to enlighten one of the themes less explored and most fascinating in Epstein’s body of work.
Keywords: Jean Epstein, The Fall of the House of Usher, portrait in film, photogenie, pain, gender in film.
Janig Bégoc, “The performativity of the painted portrait in Pier Paolo Pasolini’s Teorema”
Janig Bégoc is a senior lecturer in history and theory of visual arts at the University of Strasbourg. Her research focuses on performance art and the anthropology of images. She co-edited La performance: Entre archives et pratiques contemporaines (PUR, 2011) and La performance au risque du texte, le texte au risque de la performance (Accra, 2019).
This article focuses on the portrait of the beloved that Pietro seeks to paint in Pasolini’s Theorem (1968). While testifying to a genealogy of performance art, the young man’s experiments restore an anthropology of sacred images. By observing the portrait painted in the light of Christian theology, I seek to show that the renunciation 243of imitation and the use of bodily fluids by Pietro aim, through the incarnation, to bring into presence the Christ figure.
Keywords: Pasolini, Theorem (Film), urine, Christian anthropology, incarnation, sexualit, performativity.
Àngel Quintana, “On filmic family portraits. Familystrip by Lluís Miñarro”
Àngel Quintana is a professor of history and film theory at the University of Girona (Spain). He has published some fifteen books on cinema, including the essays Fábulas de lo visible (Acantilado, 2003) and Después del cine (Acantilado, 2011). Some of his works have been translated into French: Federico Fellini (Cahiers du cinéma / Phaedon, 2007), Virtuel? Place, 2021).
This article explores the state of the family portraits directed in the cinematic documentary field, especially Lluís Miñarro’s Familystrip, a portrait of the filmmaker’s parents made by the artist Francesc Herrero to perpetuate a memory. On the basis of the examples explored, the article seeks to define the essential features and characteristics of the works that move between the present and the past, between the private dimension of the images and their public use.
Keywords: Lluís Miñarro, Francesc Herrero, documentary, family, memory, photography.
Alice Letoulat, “From family portrait to self-portrait. Luchino Visconti’s Conversation Piece (1974)”
Alice Letoulat holds a PhD in film studies and is a researcher associated with the Linguistic, Literary, and Artistic Forms and Depictions of the Image of the Stage (FoReLLIS) laboratory and the Research Institute for the Cinema and the Audiovisual (IRCAV). Her research focuses on the relationships between cinema and other expressive forms (in particular theater, literature, and visual arts) as well as on the issues of political and memorial figuration raised by films, particularly contemporary ones.
I am interested in the role played by the painted family portraits in Conversation piece (Luchino Visconti, 1974). They question what remains, first of all of the group (a dysfunctional relationship), then of the self (the Professor’s mortifying isolation). Another portrait emerges, that of the filmmaker himself who, weakened by illness, is obliged to contain his ambitions within four walls – those of a hospital room or a cinema set.
Keywords: Conversation piece, Gruppo di famiglia in un interno, Luchino Visconti, family portraits, self-portrait.
David Vasse, “Imagining a romantic destiny. The place of the painted portrait in N’oublie pas que tu vas mourir by Xavier Beauvois (1995)”
David Vasse is an HDR lecturer in film studies at the University of Caen-Normandy. An expert on French cinema and film criticism, he is the author of Catherine Breillat, un cinéma du rite et de la transgression (Arte/Complexe, 2004), Le Nouvel âge du cinéma d’auteur français (Klincksieck, 2008), Jean-Claude Brisseau, entre deux infinis (Rouge Profond, 2015), and Critique et université: Les lois de l’hospitalité (Marest, 2020).
In N’oublie pas que tu vas mourir (1995), painting is the theoretical domain of the main character, an art history student. Knowing that he is seriously ill, he turns away from his ambitions to live an extreme adventure, on the verge of his announced death. From then on, the painted portrait will go from being an object of study to a figurative motif of a romantic destiny. This text analyzes the stages of conversion, on both a narrative and aesthetic level.
Keywords: Romanticism, fresco, disease, art, mirror.
Yann Calvet, “Hermes versus Narcissus. The Portrait of Dorian Gray (1945) by Albert Lewin”
Yann Calvet is a senior lecturer in film studies at the University of Caen Normandy. He has published several books including Cinéma, imaginaire, ésotérisme: Murnau, Dreyer, Tourneur, Lewin (l’Harmattan, 2003) and Jean Grémillon et les quatre éléments (Presses universitaires du Septentrion, 2019, co-editor). As the founder and associate editor of the journal Eclipses, he has organized several issues. He is also a contributor to a number of other journals (Double Jeu, CinémAction, Contrebande, Positif) while continuing his research on the relationship between cinema, the imaginary, and myths.
The Portrait of Dorian Gray (Albert Lewin, 1945) begins with a tribute to Charles Baudelaire and a reference to Hermes. These references build a network of meaning that goes beyond the simple narrative function to interrogate the issue of inspiration and the function of the work of art itself. The film thus puts in abyme the principle of the image as a portrait in which the characters contemplate themselves, also referring to the question of the “narcissistic” spectator.
Keywords: Hermes, Narcissus, Lewin, duality, determinism.
Lydie Decobert, “Hitchcock, murderous paintings”
Lydie Decobert is a graduate of the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts de Paris with an agrégation in fine arts and a PhD in arts and art sciences (Paris 1 – Panthéon-Sorbonne). She has published several essays on Hitchcock with Éditions L’Harmattan: L’escalier dans le cinéma d’Alfred Hitchcock, une dynamique de l’effroi (2008), L’Arc d’Alfred Hitchcock, un jeu de cordes (three volumes: Poétique de l’objet, 2012; La corde musicale, 2015; La peinture à l’œuvre, 2017), Les jeux de rideau d’Alfred Hitchcock, le théâtre de l’amour et du crime (2021).
In this paper, we want to consider how Hitchcock revisits a literary and cinematographic topos, « Le portrait enchanté », the title of a short story by Bandello (1554) and a tale by Mallarmé (1893). From Blackmail (1929) to Vertigo (1958), these « model » portraits are sneaking up: they capture the look and the trap is closing on the tricked consciences that they expose to death. Can the portraits’s murderous power be reduced to the attention they are given by the narration?
Keywords: Double, spell, model, trap, look.
248Livio Belloï, “The establishment of the portrait”
Livio Belloï is a qualified researcher at Belgium’s National Fund for Scientific Research and associate professor at the University of Liège. His most recent books include Pierre La Police. Une esthétique de la malfaçon (2019, in collaboration with Fabrice Leroy) and L’Image pour enjeu. Essais sur le cinéma expérimental contemporain (2021).
This essay aims to address the question of the painted portrait as it was posed at its origins in the vast field of early cinema. After having recalled various forms of portraiture specific to this inceptive period, my analysis will focus on The Portrait of Lady Anne (Thanhouser, 1912), a little-known film which nevertheless appears particularly revealing in regard to the staging devices and the wider stakes of the painted portrait in the cinema of the early 1910s.
Keywords: early cinema, Thanhouser, melodrama, painted portrait, model, incarnation, temporal ellipsis, reproduction.
Tristan Grünberg, “The haunted portrait. The hold of the pictorial in the films of Roger Corman”
Tristan Grünberg holds a PhD in film and audiovisual studies from the University of Paris 3 and a Master’s in art history from the University of Paris 1. His research and teaching focus on haunting figures, particularly through the prism of the relationship between 249painting and cinema in Alfred Hitchcock, Fritz Lang, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Dario Argento, and Atom Egoyan.
In Roger Corman’s cinema, the painted portrait is neither a copy, nor a simulacrum, nor even a talisman, but a ghostly menace that threatens the characters and elaborates from the inside the very matter of the movies in which it appears. Open window on the world of the deceased, it is the path through which the dead seizes the living, possesses the bodies and the framework, enforcing the plastic, rhythmic and material constraints of pictorial haunting.
Keywords: Roger Corman, Edgar Allan Poe, Funerary portrait, Tableau vivant, Haunting, Hybridisation, Incarnation, Colour.
Patrick Werly, « All About Eve de Mankiewicz.
Patrick Werly, “Mankiewicz’s All About Eve. Getting out of the portrait frame”
Patrick Werly is an HDR lecturer in comparative literature at the University of Strasbourg and works on the relationship between poetry, philosophy, and religious thought (Yves Bonnefoy et l’avenir du divin, Hermann, 2017; La décision d’Yves Bonnefoy. Fonder sur l’épiphanie, Hermann, 2021) as well as on the relationship between literature and cinema (Roberto Rossellini. Une poétique de la conversion, Le Cerf, 2010; and a book on Kieślowski in progress).
250A shot of Joseph Mankiewicz’s All About Eve (1950) shows, on a wall of the apartment of the great actress Margo Channing, Sir Joshua Reynolds’ portrait of a famous welsh tragedian of the eighteenth century, Sarah Siddons. This allegorical portrait plays a paradoxical role in the film: if it is linked to a few traits of Margo Channing, the film strives to liberate the character from her portrayal and reflects on the delusion of the image and on the differences between proper noun and real self.
Keywords: Joseph Mankiewicz, Sir Joshua Reynolds, portrait, allegory, mask, persona, self, image, lure.
Benjamin Thomas, “Girl with a Pearl Earring (Peter Webber, 2003). Portrait, form, and figure”
Benjamin Thomas, professor of film studies at the University of Strasbourg, is the author of several books on the aesthetics of cinema.
In Girl With the Pearl Earring (2003), the picture by Vermeer known by the same title is the place of a confrontation between two opposite qualities of gaze. To Vermeer’s wife, this picture is a portrait. The one of Griet, a young maid of Vermeer’s household, and it bears the trace of the desire of the painter for his model. To Vermeer 251and Griet herself, the painting is a figure: it is there as a substitute to something radically different; it acts as a support for a painting problem.
Keywords: Painting, cinema, portrait, figure, gaze.
Sophie Lécole Solnychkine, “Competition between genres. Portrait, nude, and landscape in Portrait of a Lady on Fire (Céline Sciamma, 2019)”
Sophie Lécole Solnychkine is a senior lecturer at the University Toulouse 2 – Jean Jaurès, where she teaches aesthetics and philosophy of art. An expert on the landscape in the visual arts (painting, cinema), she is developing her research within the framework of the epistemology of aesthetics at the crossroads of the history of forms and the history of ideas, from the theoretical sites constituted by film and pictorial images.
Portrait of a Lady on fire brings to the screen the painting of a portrait, which competes with two other pictorial genres: the nude and the landscape. It is also augmented by the use of two other mediums foreign to painting, printed text and music. This article aims at studying how the competitive regimes of genres and mediums nourish a both cinematographic and pictorial reflection on the nature of the act of figuring.
Keywords: portrait, painting, pictorial genres, mediums, act of figuring.
Jitka de Préval, “The painted portrait in Indian cinema or the legacy of Sanskrit theater”
Jitka de Préval defended her thesis “Le mélodrame de l’incompréhension dans le cinéma de Raj Kapoor” (1924–1988), Inde” in 2017 under the joint direction of Laurent Véray and Térésa Faucon (Sorbonne Nouvelle – Paris 3). Since then, she has devoted herself to research in the history and aesthetics of early Indian cinema. A recipient of the French National Book Center (CNL) “creation” grant, she has published a historical account Camille Legrand, un opérateur Pathé sur la route des Indes, 1895–1920, published by Riveneuve (2021).
This paper proposes to consider the painted portrait in popular Hindi cinema as a figure inherited from Sanskrit theatre. This means that in a dramatic work the act of painting takes on the function of internal joinder (antara sandhi); the painted portrait is endowed with a dynamic of its own – shakti [strength] – contributing to the progression of the narrative thread. Popular Hindi cinema follows this concept, giving the portrait a special place in the narrative.
Keywords: Hindi cinema, Sanscrit theatre, shakti, antara sandhi.
Philippe Ragel, “The Skin I Live In. Portrait of Vera as Ariadne with her back turned”
This essay focuses on Guillermo Pérez Villalta’s painting, Dionysus Finds Ariadne on Naxos, in The Skin I Live In (Almodóvar, 2011). In the bedroom where this painting hangs, a screen on the opposite wall reproduces the actions and gestures of Vera, held prisoner by the professor who has trans-sexualised her against her will. This essay contends that the use of a screen aims at creating the unfigured painted face of Villalta’s painting set in front of it.
Keywords: Almodóvar, La piel que habito, Villalta, apparatus, fantasy, iconisation, painting, transgenesis.
