A formidable intellectual tool, disputations exerted a lasting influence not only on the way ideas were presented, but also on the emerging literary genres of the sixteenth century (novel, dialogue, essay). This work contributes to the epistemology of the Renaissance by studying the debt owed by humanists to this medieval form.
