Frédéric Girard, « Introduction »

Frédéric Girard est directeur d’études émérite de l’EFEO. Spécialisé en études japonaises classiques, il travaille dans les domaines de l’histoire du bouddhisme et des religions au Japon. Il traduit le Shōbōgenzō et l’œuvre de Dōgen (1200-1253). Il a reçu le Prix Shibusawa-Claudel de la Maison Franco-Japonaise en 1992 pour Un moine de la secte Kegon à l’époque de Kamakura, Myōe (1173-1232) et le « Journal de ses rêves » ainsi que le Prix international de l’université Kanazawa en 2018.

Comment le japonais a-t-il intégré les idées et les concepts du bouddhisme et de la philosophie occidentale au cours du temps, en particulier à l’Antiquité, au Moyen Âge et aux Époques prémoderne et moderne ? On observe des similitudes entre les transpositions opérées par les procédés de lecture du sino-japonais kanbun et ceux mis en œuvre avec le sanskrit et les langues occidentales. À une phase de choc culturel succède une période de pénétration graduelle, puis d’intégration complète.

Frédéric Girard,“Introduction”

Frédéric Girard is Director of Studies emeritus at the EFEO. He specialises in Classical Japanese studies and works in the fields of the history of Buddhism and religions in Japan. He is a translator of the Shōbōgenzō and of the works of Dōgen (1200-1253). He received the Shibusawa-Claudel Prize of the Maison Franco-Japonaise in 1992 for Un moine de la secte Kegon à l’époque de Kamakura, Myōe (1173-1232) et le “Journal de ses rêves” and the International Prize of Kanazawa University in 2018.

How did Japanese integrate the ideas and concepts of Buddhism and Western philosophy over time, particularly in Antiquity, the Middle Ages and the Pre-Modern and Modern Periods? There are similarities between the transpositions made by the reading processes of Sino-Japanese kanbun and those used with Sanskrit and Western 352 languages. A phase of culture shock is followed by a period of gradual penetration, then complete integration.

Kōsei Ishii, « Traductions sinisées de textes canoniques indiens et japonisations de termes chinois de traduction »

Kōsei Ishii est professeur émérite à l’université de Komazawa. Il est spécialiste du bouddhisme et de la littérature apparentée, des arts du spectacle et de l’histoire des pays asiatiques. Il a étudié la philosophie orientale à l’université Waseda et à l’école supérieure, et a obtenu son doctorat en 1994 pour ses « études sur l’histoire de l’enseignement Huayan ». Il a écrit Kegon Shisō no kenkyū (Études sur la pensée Kegon) et Higashi Ajia Bukkyōshi (Histoire du bouddhisme en Asie de l’Est).

En Inde, il n’y a pas de mot équivalent pour « piété filiale », et les parents sont mātā-pitṛ (mère et père). En Chine, cependant, ce mot a été traduit dans le style chinois par « père-mère », et diverses bonnes actions envers les parents ont été traduites par « piété filiale ». Au Japon, dans Le Dit du Genji, la « piété filiale » signifie faire du bien à ses parents décédés. Ces différences s’appliquent également à la manière dont les phénomènes naturels vus dans les sutras sont perçus et traduits.

Kōsei Ishii, “Sinicised Translations of Indian Canonical Texts and Japanisations of Chinese Translation Terms”

Kōsei Ishii is Professor Emeritus of Komazawa University. He is a researcher of Buddhism and related literature, performing arts, and history of Asian countries. He studied Eastern philosophy at Waseda University and at the graduate school, and received his Ph.D. in 1994 for “Studies of the History of Huayan Teaching”. His major publications include Kegon Shisō no kenkyū (Studies in Kegon Thought) and Higashi Ajia Bukkyōshi (History of Buddhism in East Asia).

In India, there is no equivalent word for “filial piety,” and parents are mātā-pitṛ (mother and father). In China, however, this word was translated in the Chinese style as “father-mother,” and various good deeds toward one’s parents were translated as “filial piety”. In the case of Japan, in The Tale of Genji, “filial piety” meant to do good to one’s deceased parents. These differences also apply to the way natural phenomena seen in the sutras are perceived and translated.

Steven Heine, “Boundary-Crossing Zen in Fourteenth-Century Japan. A Case Study of the Wanshi Stream (Wanshi-Ha 宏智派)”

Steven Heine is professor and director of Asian Studies at Florida International University and a scholar of Chan/Zen Buddhist history and thought, particularly the life and teachings of Japanese master Dōgen (1200-1253). He has taught and published extensively on Japanese religion and society in worldwide perspectives. Heine has published three dozen monographs and edited volumes on the history of Zen in China and Japan and the relation of traditional East Asian spirituality to modern culture.

The Wanshi Stream was a very important and intricate crossover movement that reveals the impact of Chinese Chan institutions and poetic discourse on Zen Buddhism in early medieval Japan. Based on translations of poems from the fourteenth century as well as an historical analysis of the period, this paper challenges the conventional view that Wanshi Stream monks were Sōtō sect followers in name only by showing that lineal loyalties were quite complicated.

Steven Heine, « Le zen transfrontalier dans le Japon du xive siècle. Une étude de cas du courant Wanshi (Wanshi-Ha 宏智派) »

Steven Heine est professeur et directeur des études asiatiques à Florida International University, spécialiste de l ’ histoire et de la pensée bouddhiste Chan/Zen et de la vie et des enseignements du maître japonais Dōgen (1200-1253). Il a beaucoup enseigné et publié sur la religion et la société japonaises. Il a publié une trentaine de monographies et dirigé des ouvrages sur l ’ histoire du zen en Chine et au Japon et sur la relation entre spiritualité traditionnelle de l ’ Asie de l ’ Est et culture moderne.

Le courant Wanshi était un mouvement interculturel très important et complexe qui révèle l ’ impact des institutions Chan chinoises et du discours poétique sur le bouddhisme zen dans le Japon du début du Moyen Âge. Sur la base de traductions de poèmes du xiv e  siècle et d ’ une analyse historique de la période, cet article conteste l ’ opinion répandue qui veut que les moines de ce courant n ’ étaient des adeptes de la secte Sōtō que de nom, en montrant que les loyautés lignagères étaient assez compliquées.

Aldo Tollini, “Buddhism from China to Japan Through Translations”

Aldo Tollini taught Classical Japanese language at Ca ’ Foscari University in Venice until 2017. In addition to linguistic and translatological topics, he has worked 354 on translations of ancient and medieval Japanese Buddhist texts, in particular of the Zen school. He has produced several translations of both Chinese and Japanese texts. His most recent publications are:  Alla ricerca della mente. Testi del buddhismo chán cinese di epoca Tang (2021) and  Eihei Dōgen. Poesie (2019).

Japanese Buddhism inherited a teaching that was strongly influenced by Chinese interpretations. Moreover, the transmission of Dharma took place largely through the Chinese sūtra, with an enormous work of translation that played a central role. The Japanese language of the time, unable to deal with the complex thought of Buddhism, had to adopt a strategy called  kanbun kundoku  a peculiar mix of Japanese and Chinese languages which led to a bilingual text of a strongly hybrid nature.

Aldo Tollini, « Le bouddhisme de la Chine au Japon à travers les traductions »

Aldo Tollini a enseigné le japonais classique à l ’ université Ca ’ Foscari de Venise jusqu ’ en 2017. Outre des sujets linguistiques et traductologiques, il a travaillé sur des traductions de textes bouddhistes japonais anciens et médiévaux, en particulier de l ’ école zen. Il a réalisé plusieurs traductions de textes chinois et japonais. Ses publications les plus récentes sont : Alla ricerca della mente. Testi del buddhismo chán cinese di epoca Tang (2021) et Eihei Dōgen. Poesie (2019).

Le bouddhisme japonais a hérité d ’ un enseignement fortement influencé par les interprétations chinoises. De plus, la transmission du Dharma s ’ est faite en grande partie par les sūtra chinois, avec un énorme travail de traduction qui a joué un rôle central. La langue japonaise de l ’ époque, incapable de traiter la pensée complexe du bouddhisme, a dû adopter une stratégie appelée kanbun kundoku un mélange particulier de langues japonaise et chinoise qui a conduit à un texte bilingue de nature fortement hybride.

Francine Hérail,« La nomenclature administrative ancienne. Parallèles chinois et japonais »

Francine Hérailest historienne et spécialiste du Japon. Après avoir été professeur à l’Inalco, elle fut directrice d’études à l’École Pratique des Hautes Études, ive section. Elle est l’auteur de très nombreux ouvrages et articles sur l’histoire ancienne et médiévale du Japon. Elle est lauréate du Prix d’Aumale en 1988, du Prix Spécial de la traduction franco-japonaise 2006, et du Prix Paul-Michel Perret en 2011.

Les Japonais n’ont mis au point un système d’écriture qu’une fois en relation avec la Chine. Quand ils tentèrent d’imiter le modèle bureaucratique et centralisé de l’administration chinoise, ils empruntèrent à la Chine pour établir une administration fondée sur l’écrit, les lois et règlements étant écrits en chinois. L’auteur commente leur choix de termes désignant les organes de l’administration, leurs traductions en japonais et le système de traduction proposé pour le français.

Francine Hérail“Ancient Administrative Nomenclature. Chinese and Japanese Parallels”

Francine H érail is a historian and a Japan specialist. She has been professor at Inalco, then director of studies at the École Pratique des Hautes Études, 4th section. She is the author of numerous books and articles on the ancient and medieval history of Japan. She was awarded the Prix d ’ Aumale in 1988, the Prix Spécial de la traduction franco-japonaise in 2006, and the Prix Paul-Michel Perret in 2011.

The Japanese did not establish a writing system until they were in contact with China. When they tried to imitate the bureaucratic and centralised model of Chinese administration, they borrowed from China to create an administration based on writing, with laws and regulations written in Chinese. The author comments on their choice of terms designating the organs of the administration, their translations into Japanese and the proposed translation system for French.

William M. Bodiford, « La relecture des écritures bouddhiques en Chine et chez Dōgen »

William M. Bodiford est professeur d’études bouddhistes et de la religion du Japon et de l’Asie de l’Est à l’université de Californie à Los Angeles. Ses publications portent sur le bouddhisme zen comme le zen Soto, mais aussi sur les traditions bouddhistes Tendai et Vinaya, le shinto, le folklore et les religions populaires et les arts martiaux japonais. Auteur de nombreux ouvrages, il a également contribué à une traduction du Denkōroku de Keizan Jōkin et du Shōbōgenzō de Dōgen.

Le maître zen Dōgen (1200-1253) est connu et célébré pour ses méthodes innovantes de relecture et de reformulation de la littérature bouddhique chinoise. Un examen plus approfondi des généalogies textuelles de ses travaux 356révèle de multiples couches de transformation textuelle. Ils démontrent que Dōgen participait à une culture dynamique de relecture et de reformulation des textes reçus.

William M. Bodiford, “The Re-reading of Buddhist Scriptures in China and in Dōgen”

William M. Bodiford is Professor of Buddhist Studies and the Religion of Japan and East Asia at the University of California, Los Angeles. His publications focus on Zen Buddhism such as Soto Zen, as well as the Tendai and Vinaya Buddhist traditions, Shinto, folklore and popular religions, and Japanese martial arts. The author of numerous books, he has also contributed to a translation of Keizan Jōkin ’ s Denkōroku and Dōgen ’ s Shōbōgenzō.

Zen master Dōgen (1200-1253) is known and celebrated for his innovative methods of rereading and rewording Chinese Buddhist literature. A closer examination of the textual genealogies of these materials reveals multiple layers of textual transformation. They demonstrate that Dōgen was a participant in a vibrant culture of rereading and rewording received texts.

Zuzana Kubovčáková, “From Today to Tomorrow, from Today to Yesterday. Continuity and Discontinuity of Dōgen’s Language”

Zuzana Kubovčáková works at the Department of Japanese Studies at Masaryk University in Brno, Czech Republic. Her MAs (Bratsilava and London) concentrated on the earliest history of Zen schools in Japan. She pursued her PhD at Department for the Study of Religions, Masaryk University in Brno. She taught at University of Vienna and Nanzan University in Nagoya, Japan. Her research focuses on the study and translation of the Shōbōgenzō and Dōgen ’ s other writings.

Based on a linguistic examination of the writings of Zen master Dōgen, the paper provides a portrayal of the master ’ s unique use of language that lies at the basis of his philosophy. By analysing a chapter of the Treasury of the True Dharma Eye , the essay “Being-Time” or “The Being of Time”, “Uji”, this article examines several of Dōgen ’ s approaches to the structural difference between Classical Chinese and Japanese in the process of transmitting the Zen tradition from the mainland to Japan.

Zuzana Kubovčáková, « D’aujourd’hui à demain, d’aujourd’hui à hier. Continuité et discontinuité de la langue de Dōgen »

Zuzana Kubovčáková travaille au département d ’ études japonaises de l ’ université Masaryk de Brno, en République tchèque. Ses Masters (Bratsilava et Londres) portaient sur la première histoire des écoles zen au Japon. Elle a obtenu son doctorat au département d ’ étude des religions de l ’ université Masaryk de Brno. Elle a enseigné à l ’ université de Vienne et à l ’ université Nanzan de Nagoya, au Japon. Ses recherches portent sur l ’ étude et la traduction du Shōbōgenzō et des autres écrits de Dōgen.

Sur la base d ’ un examen linguistique des écrits du maître zen Dōgen, l ’ article décrit l ’ utilisation unique de la langue par le maître, qui est à la base de sa philosophie. En analysant un chapitre du Trésor du véritable œil du Dharma , l ’ essai « Être-temps » ou « L ’ être du temps », « Uji », cet article examine plusieurs approches de Dōgen quant à la différence structurelle entre le chinois classique et le japonais dans le processus de transmission de la tradition zen du continent au Japon.

Frederik Cryns, « Le corps et l’esprit en tant que corps liquides. Premières interprétations japonaises des concepts cartésiens »

Frederik Cryns est professeur et directeur général adjoint du Centre international de recherche en études japonaises (Nichibunken) à Kyoto. Il est spécialiste de l’interaction entre le monde occidental et le Japon. Il effectue des recherches sur l’usine néerlandaise de Hirado qui renseigne sur les relations étrangères du Japon au début de la période Edo. Il prépare des traductions de ces documents. Il a écrit des livres sur le Japon, la science occidentale au Japon et l’usine hollandaise.

Dans la seconde moitié du xviiie siècle, les concepts cartésiens du dualisme entre le corps et l’âme ont été introduits au Japon par le biais d’ouvrages médicaux occidentaux. Dans cet article, l’auteur analyse les traductions de ces ouvrages par les savants Sugita Genpaku et Udagawa Genshin. En comparant les textes occidentaux avec les traductions de Genpaku et de Genshin, il montre que tous deux interprétaient les concepts cartésiens dans le cadre de la pensée chinoise classique.

Frederik Cryns, “Body and Mind as Fluid Bodies. Early Japanese Interpretations of Cartesian Concepts”

Frederik Cryns is Professor and Deputy Director-General at the International Research Center for Japanese Studies (Nichibunken) in Kyoto. He is a specialist of the interaction between the Western world and Japan. He is currently doing research on the documents of the Dutch Factory in Hirado which offer information on Japan ’ s foreign relations in the early Edo period. He is preparing translations of these materials. He has written books on Japan, Western science in Japan and the Dutch factory.

In the latter half of the 18th century, cartesian concepts of the dualism between the body and soul were introduced to Japan through the medium of western medical books. In this article the author analysed the translations of these books by the scholars Sugita Genpaku and Udagawa Genshin. By comparing the western texts with Genpaku ’ s and Genshin ’ s translations he shows that both interpreted the cartesian concepts within the framework of Classical Chinese thought.

Frédéric Girard, « Les problèmes de traduction dans le Compendium de philosophie et de leur empreinte au Japon durant le Siècle chrétien (xvie-xviie siècle) »

Frédéric Girard examine le vocabulaire du Compendium de philosophie (1595), adaptation en japonais du De Anima d’Aristote, du jésuite Pedro Gómez (1535-1600). Essai de traduction des concepts de la philosophie occidentale en japonais, il est destiné à convaincre les Japonais qu’ils ont une âme rationnelle. L’interdiction de Balthasar Gago (1555) de rendre ces concepts à l’aide du vocabulaire bouddhique visait à distinguer les deux univers religieux du bouddhisme et du christianisme.

Frédéric Girard, “Translation Problems in the Compendium of Philosophy and Their Impact in Japan During the Christian Century (16th–17th Century)”

Frédéric Girard examines the vocabulary of the Compendium of Philosophy (1595), a Japanese adaptation of Aristotle ’ s De Anima, by the Jesuit Pedro Gómez (1535–1600). An attempt to translate Western philosophical concepts into Japanese, it was intended to convince the Japanese that they had a rational soul. Balthasar Gago ’ s 359 (1555) prohibition of rendering these concepts using Buddhist vocabulary was intended to distinguish the two religious worlds of Buddhism and Christianity.

Takako Saito, « À propos des difficultés de traduction en japonais du concept allemand Person dans l’éthique kantienne »

Takako Saito est maître de conférences à l’Inalco, responsable du groupe d’études de philosophie japonaise à l’Institut français de recherche sur l’Asie de l’Est (IFRAE/Inalco, université Paris Cité, CNRS, UM 8043).

Cet article examine la réception de l’éthique kantienne qui a introduit au Japon dans les années 1890 un nouveau concept de la personne comme fin en soi. Trois textes de Nishida Kitarô (1870-1945) seront abordés : d’abord, « Kanto rinri gaku » (l’Éthique de Kant) de 1893, puis « Gurîn shi rinri tetsugaku no tai », qui retrace en 1895 la grande ligne du Prolegomena to Ethics (1883) de Thomas Hill Green, enfin, « Rinri gaku sôan » (Le Cahier préparatif de l’éthique) rédigé en 1905 et 1906.

Takako Saito, “On the Difficulties of Translating the German Concept Person into Japanese in Kantian Ethics”

Takako Saito is lecturer at Inalco, head of the Japanese philosophy study group at the French Institute for Research on East Asia (IFRAE/ Inalco, Paris Cité University, CNRS, UMR 8043).

This article examines the reception of Kantian ethics, which introduced a new concept of the person as an end in itself in Japan in the 1890s. Three texts by Nishida Kitarô (1870–1945) will be discussed: first, “Kanto rinri gaku” (Kant ’ s Ethics) from 1893, then “Gurîn shi rinri tetsugaku no tai”, which retraces in 1895 the main line of Thomas Hill Green ’ s Prolegomena to Ethics (1883), and finally, “Rinri gaku sôan” (the preparatory notebook of ethics) written in 1905 and 1906.

Giada Ricci, « Les mots de l’espace au Japon. Musée et mise en exposition »

Giada Ricci, architecte and docteur en histoire de l’art, muséologue et scénographe, expert pour l’UNESCO, enseigne à l’École du Louvre, à la Sorbonne Abou-Dhabi, à 360l’université Meiji à Tokyo. Ses recherches, au sein du CRCAO du Collège de France portent sur l’espace muséographique, les dispositifs spatiaux des musées d’art contemporain et l’histoire du musée moderne au Japon. Elle a publié Art et musée au Japon, l’espace et les sens ainsi que de nombreux articles scientifiques sur le langage de l’espace et les modes d’exposition des œuvres.

La traduction de concepts et de vocabulaire muséal et muséographique donne lieu dès l’après-guerre à la recherche d’équivalences en japonais de mots nouveaux comme « musée » et « muséum », « œuvre d’art » et « mise en exposition ». L’intégration de concepts de l’esthétique occidentale aboutit à une terminologie de l’espace au musée adaptée à l’histoire culturelle du Japon et à son esthétique, et contribue à l’éclosion d’une spatialité dans une pensée originale et ouverte de l’espace du musée.

Giada Ricci, “Vocabulary of Space in Japan. Museum and Artwork Display”

Giada Ricci, architect and PhD history of Art, is a lecturer at Sorbonne University Abu-Dhabi, École du Louvre, Meiji University Tokyo, and a UNESCO Museum Expert. She is a specialist of museology and exhibition design, researching the language of museum space and modes of display in contemporary art museums, developing a history of modern museum in Japan (CRCAO, Collège de France). Her major publications include Art et musée au Japon, l’espace et les sens, and several papers on the language of space and the modes of artwork display.

The translation of museum and museographic concepts and vocabulary led to the search for Japanese equivalents of new words such as “museum” and “museum”, “work of art” and “exhibition”. The integration of concepts from Western aesthetics led to a terminology of space in the museum adapted to the cultural history of Japan and its aesthetics, and contributed to the emergence of a spatiality in an original and open way of thinking about the museum space.

Mikio Takemoto, « Les notions esthétiques du Nô. Entre le commentaire et la traduction » 

Mikio Takemoto est professeur à l’université de Waseda. Il a été directeur du Tsubouchi Memorial Theatre Museum (2004-2013). Lauréat du prix Kanze Hisao Nô de l’université Hōsei, il a notamment publié Études sur le Nô pendant l’époque d’Edo, 1993, Le Nô à l’époque de Kan’ami et de Zeami, 1999 et Le développement du Nô 361pendant l’époque de Muromachi, 2002. Il a une longue expérience en tant qu’archiviste, amateur et critique de spectacles traditionnels.

Les ouvrages classiques japonais nécessitent une traduction littérale en langue moderne pour être mieux compris des lecteurs contemporains. Les traités de Nô de Zeami n’échappent pas à la règle avec leurs concepts esthétiques à contre-usage de leur temps. Ils sont souvent aussi des copies fautives. De plus, Zeami utilise des transcriptions hors norme ainsi qu’un vocabulaire spécifique seul compris de l’acteur, du choriste ou du musicien, avec des tournures vulgaires inconnues des dictionnaires.

Mikio Takemoto, “The Aesthetic Notions of Noh.Between Commentary and Translation”

Mikio Takemoto is Professor at Waseda University. He was Director of the Tsubouchi Memorial Theatre Museum (2004–2013). Awardee of the Kanze Hisao Noh Award of Hōsei University, his publications include Studies on Noh during the Edo period, 1993, Noh in the times of Kan’ami and Zeami, 1999 and On the development of Noh in the Muromachi period, 2002. He has a long experience as archivist, fan, and critic of traditional performance.

Classical Japanese texts require a literal translation into the modern language to be better understood by contemporary readers. Zeami ’ s Noh treatises are no exception to the rule, with their aesthetic concepts at odds with their time. They are often also faulty copies.
