The libretto for La Dame blanche, written by Scribe, is directly inspired by two of Walter Scott’s novels, Guy Mannering and The Monastery. This libretto reflects the work that went into the librettist’s efforts to adapt it using space, costumes, and, more generally, the development of the plot. This article also examines how the musician draws on local Scottish color to compose his work, which will meet with great success on French stages.
