According to Adèle Hugo and Marie Nodier, Charles Nodier showed little sensitivity to the opera. However, his Scottish travel diary and his article on the opera of Jean-François Lesueur, Ossian, ou les Bardes, tend to belie this reputation. He devotes his attention more to the music of Lesueur than to his libretto, which he considers to be of poor quality; the motif of the dream, as an exploration of the unconscious, quite directly anticipates his own preoccupations.
