The “pre-cinematic” quality that critics recognize in Balzac’s work is also apparent in his film adaptations. The intermedial approach, which takes into account Balzac’s creative process and enriches the dialogue between his prose and the artistic output it inspired, even allows for a better grasp of the author’s realist intention and reveals that Balzac himself understands himself as both object and subject of the task of adaptation.
