Based on the analyses of N. Elias concerning the “social learning” of self-awareness as well as on studies by M. Perrot on the role of housing in the valorization of private life, this article interprets Le Cousin Pons as a reflection on the relationship between the interiority of the individual and the surrounding social world. Status as a single person and the hero’s status as artist is related to the topic of home violation and the importance of threshold figures.
