Quelle biographie pour l'artiste ?

  • Publication type: Article from a collective work
  • Collective work: Signés Malraux. André Malraux et la question biographique
  • Author: Travi (Claude)
  • Abstract: In a 1951 text devoted to Jean Fautrier, André Malraux states: “The biographies of artists only interest me when they speak of the events – which are quite rare – which modify their art”. Far from seeing this as evidence of the writer’s desire to hide away his “little pile of secrets”, this article develops the paradox that a biography is the opposite of writing, expect if it is imaginary or written by another artist, and uses the example of Octavio Paz writing the biography of Sor Juana Inès de la Cruz.
