  • Abstract: At the extreme end of the eighteenth century, the theater of the Revolution gave birth to the melodrama. It borrowed many subjects from novels and particularly from gothic novels, which were very in vogue at the time. Here, the analysis of a few examples of adaptations focuses on the passages where scenes and descriptions allow virtual images to give form to the imagination and to the fantasies of readers and viewers while eliciting powerful emotions.
