Symphonie shakespearienne Enjeux de la transposition musicale du romanesque shakespearien chez les compositeurs romantiques (Berlioz, Schumann, Liszt)

This article examines the experiments that Berlioz, Schumann and Liszt, in their romantic quest for a “Shakespearian symphony,” conducted in the narrative and sequential organization of music in three of their Shakespeare-inspired works. It shows that the romantics’ “pure music” acquired autonomy through its self-construction in relation to a novelistic narrativity for which the Shakespearean model is essential.
