  • Abstract: This article examines the experiments that Berlioz, Schumann and Liszt, in their romantic quest for a “Shakespearian symphony,” conducted in the narrative and sequential organization of music in three of their Shakespeare-inspired works. It shows that the romantics’ “pure music” acquired autonomy through its self-construction in relation to a novelistic narrativity for which the Shakespearean model is essential.
