  • Abstract: Two great novels of the interwar period show a mystical vision of joy, La Joie by Georges Bernanos (1929) and Que ma joie demeure by Jean Giono (1935). Between the ardent Christianity of Bernanos and the « earth religions » of Giono, the differences are undeniable. But these novels have both confronted the ideal of a mystical joy to the test of otherness and temporality. Thus Bernanos and Giono, each in its own way, tried to answer a spiritual crisis historically dated.
