L’Homme sans qualités, une mystique sans Dieu

  • Publication type: Article from a collective work
  • Collective work: Roman mystique, mystiques romanesques aux xxe et xxie siècles
  • Author: Mommaers (Paul)
  • Abstract: The Man without Qualities is rightly considered a “roman mystique”. “The other state” that falls to Ulrich and Agathe resembles the awareness attributed to acknowledged mystics. Moreover, we know other instances of “mysticism without God” than the one evoked in the novel where “God” is substituted by “Reality”. This mystical “adventure” develops first into the exaltation of the couple in the “enchanted garden”, then, the “real reality” of the world starts casting shadows on “Reality”.
