This article attempts to explore Barthes' understanding of the "neutral" in its relation to the pathological and, more generally, to the medical tradition within which this notion has been articulated. My analysis will focus on the vitalité désespérée, a phrase that Barthes takes from Pasolini in order to describe, by means of successive displacements, the active and effective dimensions of the neutral.
