Scrutinizing the young Verlaine’s correspondence and reviews of his first collections shows that, for the majority of critics, Verlaine’s language, verse, and style clashed with their notion of poetry, as if the poet were writing not with but against it—or at least against their academic grasp of it. But if this rejection of the conventions of his time makes his poetry “bizarre” or “affecté,” it is also what makes it modern.
