The year 1843 is a turning point in the French theatre’s history, that Nerval considers in his dramatic critic of the years 1844-1846. The tragedy’s return appears to be less a true reaction than a sign of the inability of the theatre to produce dramatic forms adapted to its times. To Nerval, the reaction is the symptom of the romanticist failure, which hasn’t managed to replace the Old Regime theatre by a modern theatre.
