Our study aims to locate Proustian ideas about Nerval in the history of Nerval criticism. While refuting the traditionalist and patriotic point of view of Maurice Barrès and Jules Lemaitre at the beginning of the 20th century, Proust seems to have well assimilated the two currents of criticism on Nerval at the end of the 19th century: pathological studies and symbolist criticism. The article by Arvède Barine in particular may be one of the important sources for Proust.
