The word “chic” in Tristan Corbière’s work is not so much remarkable for its (relative) frequency as for its semantic indeterminacy and the signature it embodies, with its onomatopoeic garb and obsolete semantics. This article seeks to show how Corbière transformed a simple yet paradoxical definition into a convoluted and twisted word-concept, from the moment he qualifies (by disqualifying) his own thinking and poetic practice.
