Miss Sacripant’s watercolour – that is, a portrait of Odette dressed as a man – leads the hero to a new stage of knowledge. This portrait is motivated by the bisexuality of the model and by the fashion, in painting and photography, to disguise women in masculine clothes. Several real people acted as the model, in keeping with the Proustian technique which consists of using numerous models for a single creation, composition being always composite.
