Le paysage durassien, entre abstraction et fantasme

The landscape in ­Duras’ work is never trivial: it is not described but pervaded by a ­constant existential problematic, that of an overflow or lack. Only a few panoramas are offered to the ­contemplative eye: either the view is blocked or threatened by shadow or the character himself/herself is engulfed by the landscape. Despite attempts to normalize it, the landscape is ­constantly being destabilized by fantasy. It remains the space where something is unleashed, as if tragically undermined by the madness of an initial lack.
