Abstract: The landscape in Duras’ work is never trivial: it is not described but pervaded by a constant existential problematic, that of an overflow or lack. Only a few panoramas are offered to the contemplative eye: either the view is blocked or threatened by shadow or the character himself/herself is engulfed by the landscape. Despite attempts to normalize it, the landscape is constantly being destabilized by fantasy. It remains the space where something is unleashed, as if tragically undermined by the madness of an initial lack.
