Laughing until the end, and beyond A study of the comical in ‘Alī Ǧanāḥ al-Tabrīzī wa-tābi‘u-hu Quffa

Even though it is a highly comical play, owing to its uncertain ending and its bitter message, we cannot consider ʿAlī Ǧanāḥ al-Tabrīzī wa-tābiʿuhu Quffa (Alfred Faraj, 1967) to be a comedy. Through an analytical approach that takes account of the play’s text, hypotext, and enunciative context, this contribution reveals the types of humor used by the author and determines their socio-political function.
