In the first six books of the Confessions, Rousseau identifies himself with figures which become his doubles and which he imitates and – on occasion – makes disappear. This article considers these ambiguous models : brothers, cousins, friends, but also the author himself, behind the mask of these other identities, and used by Jean-Jacques in order to construct his individuality.
