France is not absent from the European landscape of the novel in the sixteenth century. François Rabelais, Hélisenne de Crenne, Guillaume des Autels, and Barthélemy Aneau created a type of fiction without national or foreign precedent by imbuing it with the modes of writing and thought that came from humanism.
