Bruscambille auteur dramatique et défenseur du théâtre

  • Publication type: Article from a collective work
  • Collective work: Le Dramaturge sur un plateau. Quand l’auteur dramatique devient personnage
  • Authors: Roberts (Hugh), Tomarken (Annette)
  • Abstract: The 115 prologues by Bruscambille, the early seventeenth-century actor, contain one of the first defenses of the theatre in French, and a careful discussion of comedy in general. The author-actor forges a close connection with his audience and readers, making ironic remarks about his writing and his rivals. His defense of the theatre recalls those of Italian actors but insists more on farce, notably through the topos of the world as a theatre.
