The second volume of Théophile Gautier's Œuvre fantastique, which adds to and completes the 1992 edition, contains three novels which appeared between 1856 and 1865, forgotten masterpieces of the Romantic novel. They go against the realist current while presenting themselves as “the supernatural in black”.
