The hermaphrodite is at once both an ideal of lost unity and an anatomical reality. Between the sixteenth and the eighteenth century, it occupied a strategic place in numerous intellectual fields and artistic representations, interrogating the frontiers between masculinity and femininity, normality and monstrosity, myth and reality.
