Based on the experience of translating the Fourth Book, the study of alimentary isotopy in the names in the list of cooks in Chapter XL shows how it is an example of “illustrated grammar” that gives us to see Rabelais as grammarian and poet: its plays on signifier and signified explore the domain of orthography, phonetics, and etymology; the poetic effects produced bring it close to the enumerative writing of verse; and yet in the end the parodic dimension prevails.
