Value for Money The Financial Transactions and Commercial Dealings of the Comédie-Française from the 1750s to the Early 1790s

This article examines how the Comédie-Française spent money in the 18th century. Orders were placed all year round to enable stage-productions and the smooth day-to-day administration of the theatre, with regard to both the maintenance of the playhouse and its operation. Bills are scrutinised to identify the troupe’s most significant items of expenditure, commercial practices and deals made with suppliers.
