Traces of Choreographic Stardom at the Opera Talent, Celebrity, Dance Genres and Gendered Hierarchies of Remuneration in the Tablettes de Renommée (1785) by Mathurin Roze de Chantoiseau

In 1785, Chantoiseau published an almanac entitled Les Tablettes de renommée, which offered a panorama of dance professionals at the Paris Opera. This article examines the occupational categories and hierarchy that determined their individual artistic and economic value within the theatrical market. It demonstrates how celebrity, talent and dance styles were categories that perpetuated and justified a strong gendered differentiation in labour, salaries and careers.
