In the few fabliaux that are set in a curial environment, the latter is represented as a closed world that is tightly bound to its unity, since the very nature of the fabliau is to feature characters who are potentially destructive of social stability. Faced with disruptors such as Trubert, dissension ceases and the aristocratic world appears as a much more united community than it generally is. The troublemaker thus proves to be the ideal scapegoat for a society in need of reference points.
