This article relates Luis Buñuel’s work to that of William Hogarth, both thematically and theoretically, drawing parallels with respect to Hogarth’s theory of the serpentine line, and focuses in particular on the breakdown of narrative linearity and perspective in the director’s later films, most notably The Phantom of Liberty (1974).
