While there was a “Rembrandtism” in photography and cinematography in the 1910s and 1920s, I uncover a “Hogarthism,” associated with pictorialism, and which emerged across the Atlantic from the turn of the 20th century to the 1920s and 1930s, centered on the “line of beauty.” With particular reference to the representation of landscapes, it circulated from the graphic arts to art education, via photography and cinema, eventually becoming part of the professional lexicon of operators and cinematographers.
