Since the dictatorship (1926), only detective stories escaped to the inception. Dinis Machado, also known as Denis Mac Shade, used implicit references and hidden messages and moved the plot to a different time and place to tackle topics which were usually out-of-bounds under a dictatorship. Under the guise of a mere translation of an American author, his work brought a breath of freedom.
