In 1942, Giraudoux collaborated as a screenwriter and dialogue writer on Jacques de Baroncelli’s film La Duchesse de Langeais, based on Balzac’s novel. His script focuses on the psychological and poetic aspect of the relationship between the Duchess and Montriveau. By simplifying and removing several references to the social context of the nineteenth century, he represents the world he knew. This article proposes to study the various problems emerging from adapting the novel to the screen.
